Augustus de Morgan, Arithmetical Books from the Invention of Printing to the Present Time Being Brief Notices of a Large Number of Works Draw Up from Actual Inspection by Augustus de Morgan
Augustus de Morgan
Arithmetical Books from the Invention of Printing to the Present Time Being Brief Notices of a Large Number of Works Draw Up from Actual Inspection by Augustus de Morgan
London, Taylor and Walton, 1847. First edition. Cloth. A catalogue of books on arithmetic by the notable British mathematician and logician Augustus De Morgan who made major contributions to the study of logic (including the formulation of De Morgan"s laws) and introduced the term "mathematical induction". Noted as "probably the first significant work of scientific bibliography", this volume deals with works from the invention of printing up until the time of publication, and contains "brief notices of a large number of works", providing an accurate record of the early history of publishing on arithmetic. In research for this text, Morgan surveyed the library of the Royal Society, works in the British Museum, the wares of specialist booksellers, and the private collections of himself and his friends to compile a chronological list of books from 1491 to 1846 (the final book being a work of his own), giving bibliographical details, a description of the contents, and sometimes comments on the mathematics on display. A first edition copy, in a brown cloth binding. In cloth binding. Externally sound, there is rubbing to the extremities, as well as wear to the joints and minor loss to spine-label, with some further shelfwear and strain to hinges. Internally, the pages are firmly bound and are generally bright and clean throughout, though there are some instances of spotting to the endpages. Very Good Indeed . Ill.: None. Very Good Indeed .

Morgan, Augustus de.
On the Syllogism : and other logical writings.
Edited, with an introduction, by Peter Heath. London : Routledge & Kegan Paul, 1966. First edition. Orig. cloth binding. Dustjacket. xxxi,355 pp. Fine copy. Mailorder only - Alleen verzending mogelijk. Book condition : very good. - Originally published in 1966 On the Syllogism and Other Logical Writings assembles for the first time the five celebrated memoirs of Augustus De Morgan on the syllogism. These are collected together with the more condensed accounts of his researches given in his Syllabus of a Proposed System of Logic an article on Logic contributed to the English Cyclopaedia. De Morgan was among the most distinguished of nineteenth century British mathematicians but is chiefly remembered today as one of the founders of modern mathematical logic. His writings on this subject have been little read, however since apart from his Formal Logic, they lie buried for the most part in inaccessible periodicals. De Morgan's own later amendments are inserted in the text and the editorial introduction gives a summary of the whole and traces in some detail the course of the once-famous feud with Sir William Hamilton of Edinburgh.
